Indiana changed the rules. Most solar pitches haven’t caught up.

Until 2022, Indiana’s largest utilities — AES Indiana, Duke Energy Indiana, NIPSCO, CenterPoint, and Indiana Michigan Power — credited rooftop solar at the full retail rate under net metering. For new systems, that’s over. You’re now enrolled in Excess Distributed Generation (EDG), which credits exported power at roughly 3–5¢ per kWh while you keep buying electricity back at 14–17¢.

On top of that, the 30% federal residential solar tax credit (Section 25D) expired on December 31, 2025. A system you buy outright today earns no federal credit. Any installer still leading with “30% off” is selling you something that no longer exists.

The right one is a system you consume yourself — a right-sized array, battery storage that holds the afternoon’s production for the evening, and controls that decide where every kilowatt-hour goes. Is solar still worth it in Indiana in 2026?

For a lot of homes, yes — but the math is different than it was two years ago, and anyone who answers this question without looking at your utility bill is guessing. Two things changed: the 30% federal residential tax credit ended on December 31, 2025, and Indiana’s major utilities stopped offering retail-rate net metering to new customers back in 2022. What still works in your favor is that Indiana electricity rates keep climbing, equipment costs have come down, and the state sales and property tax exemptions are both still in place. The systems that pencil out now are the ones designed around using your own power rather than selling it. That’s the assessment we do for free — including telling you if the answer for your house is “not yet.”

What happened to the 30% federal solar tax credit?

It expired. The Residential Clean Energy Credit under Section 25D of the tax code was repealed early by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed in July 2025, and it no longer applies to expenditures made after December 31, 2025. If you buy a system with cash or a loan in 2026, there is no federal credit — no phase-down, no transition period. If you installed in 2025 or earlier, your credit is unaffected and you can still carry forward any unused portion. A federal credit does still exist on the commercial side (Section 48E) and can reach homeowners indirectly through third-party-owned arrangements like leases and PPAs, where the system owner claims it. We’re happy to explain how that works for your situation, but please confirm anything tax-related with your CPA — we install systems, we don’t file returns.

What is Excess Distributed Generation (EDG) and how does it affect my bill?

EDG is what replaced net metering in Indiana. Under the old rules, every kilowatt-hour you sent to the grid offset one you bought later, at the same price. Under EDG, the utility credits your exports at roughly 125% of their avoided cost — which in practice has been running around 3 to 5 cents per kWh — while you continue buying power at the retail rate of roughly 14 to 17 cents. So exporting a kilowatt-hour is worth about a quarter of what using it yourself is worth. This applies to new customers of AES Indiana, Duke Energy Indiana, NIPSCO, CenterPoint, and Indiana Michigan Power. If you’re on a rural electric co-op or a municipal utility, your terms may be better — we’ll check yours specifically. And if you already have solar under legacy net metering, you keep it.

Do I actually need a battery, or will panels alone do?

Panels alone still work, and for some households they’re the right call — particularly if you use most of your electricity during daylight hours. But under EDG, every kilowatt-hour you export is worth about a quarter of one you use yourself, and most families use the bulk of their power after sunset. A battery closes that gap: it holds your midday production and releases it during the evening peak, so more of what you generate offsets electricity at the full retail rate. It also keeps your critical circuits alive during an outage, which panels alone will not do. We’ll model both scenarios with your real usage data and show you the difference in writing rather than asking you to take our word for it.

How much does a solar system cost in Indiana?

Cost depends on your usage, roof, electrical panel, and whether you’re adding storage — a modest array on a simple roof and a whole-home system with battery backup are genuinely different projects. Will my lights stay on during a power outage?

Only if you have a battery. This surprises people: a grid-tied solar array without storage shuts down during an outage. That’s a safety requirement — it protects utility line workers from a system backfeeding into lines they’re repairing. With battery storage and the right transfer equipment, your designated critical circuits stay live and your panels keep recharging the battery through the outage. During the assessment we’ll help you decide which circuits matter most — typically the refrigerator, furnace blower, well pump, internet, and a few outlets.

What warranties do you offer?

25 years on our solar products and 10 years on our installation workmanship. The distinction matters more than most homeowners realize: a manufacturer’s product warranty covers the panel itself, but if the problem is a roof penetration or a wiring fault, that’s workmanship — and plenty of installers offer only one or two years there, or have gone out of business by the time you need them. We’ve been operating in Indiana for over a decade and we service what we install.
